This past Tuesday, I had the privilege of participating in the "Beauty's on the Inside" assembly with the Shawn Ireland Show at Bunsold Middle School in Marysville, OH. I was there to take pictures of the event so we could start a little mini digital scrapbook for it and I was so moved by the message, I wanted to take a moment to share a little about it with you here on the blog.
"Beauty's on the Inside" is put on by the S.I.S. Club Care Corps, an organization that raises funds in support of local charitable organizations for women and children. (S.I.S.=The Shawn Ireland Show.) This particular program is aimed toward teenaged girls with the goal of building self-esteem and ridding schools of the pressures (and meanness/bullying) often associated with teen life.
*Special thanks to Ms. Shaffer from Bunsold M.S. for providing the above pictures!
On one designated day each month, the girls pledge to look the same--no makeup, hair pulled back, wearing jeans/sweatpants and their "Beauty's on the Inside" t-shirt. And this week, Bunsold kicked off the program with an in-school assembly featuring Shawn Ireland and Kelli B (from the Shawn Ireland Show), Jessica Germain (of Germain Honda of Dublin) and Nichole Redic (a licensed professional counselor) as the special guest speakers.
Shawn, Kelli, Jessica and Nichole shared their own experiences with real-life "Mean Girls", what it was like growing up being the ones made fun of for this and that and the other, and stressing the lessons they learned in life about beauty coming from what's inside.
Now, I'm sure you're asking...
"What on earth does this have to do with scrapbooking?"
To which I'd like to respond--everything.
See, scrapbooking is not just about noting special occasions and events in our lives--weddings, sporting events, birthday parties and school days--though those topics certainly play a HUGE role in what we scrapbook and why. But it's also about telling a story... sharing who we are and what we're made of. The things we like, the people we love, and the lessons we learn.
It's about recognizing the characteristics within us that make our lives scrappable! You know, those unique little personal traits about yourself and/or your loved ones you hope forever to embrace; never to forget. I know that personally, some of my favorite, most meaningful scrabook layouts are the ones that feature those "inside" themes over some of the "outside" ones. How about you?
I read somewhere once that children who see themselves in photographs around the home tend to have higher self-esteem. I can't for the life of me remember where I saw the article, but it was in regards to having framed prints on the walls and their inpact on our kids. And I remember thinking... "how much more do we lift one's spirit through scrapbooking when we combine some of those favorite photos with the words + stories behind them"?
I kinda wish I'd had a program like "Beauty's on the Inside" come around to tell ME that it didn't matter what others said, what I looked like or how I dressed--that beauty's on the inside. So I'm glad that as I scrapbooker, I have that opportunity to "pay it forward" to my daughter, in her scrapbooks, by communicating that very same message throughout the pages of her album.
So my challenge to you is this:
The next time you sit down to scrapbook, choose one of those "inside" themes for a change. Scrapbook about yourself--your strengths, your quirks, your likes/dislikes. Scrapbook about a friend or a loved one and what it is about them that you love so much.
Embrace the beauty within of your subject at hand and when you're done, don't just put it away in an album and forget about it.... Share It. You just never know when it might brighten someone's day.
